February NPX Reading List - Week 2

I’m reading some amazing plays this month — I don’t think I’ve ever read so many plays I’ve loved in such close proximity. I’m very grateful for the New Play Exchange for introducing me to so many incredible artists.

FEBRUARY 8: Crowndation; I Will Not Lie to David by Angelica Cheri
A tender expression of hope and heartbreak, this is a dazzling one-woman show about loss and claiming your life as your own in the face of questions and uncertainty. It's a pleasure to go on this woman's journey through her 29th year.

FEBRUARY 9: The Arrangement by JM Chambers
A sweet, cute romantic comedy about boundaries and compromise. Romcoms are hard to find for the stage, and this would be such a fun addition to an evening of short romcoms.

FEBRUARY 10: The Three Brujas by Christin Eve Cato
I loved THE THREE BRUJAS -- a clever set up with snappy dialogue makes this play an absolute must-read, especially for Shakespeare-lovers.

FEBRUARY 11: When They See Me by Twinkle Burke
What a stunning play -- I agree with the other recommendations: this play must be staged. An utterly unique concept with layers of meaning and conflict that go so much deeper than the surface level. I can't wait to be introduced to more of Burke's writing.

FEBRUARY 12: Waverly Place by Gloria J. Browne-Marshall
A fascinating one-man show set in its own world, where ghosts may just be real. The barbershop is a country all to itself, populated with fascinating characters and intrigue. This would be an extraordinary and exciting challenge for an actor to work together with an artistic team to bring this play to life. It would be fascinating to see produced.

FEBRUARY 13: Unnerving Stains by Tramaine Brathwaite
I LOVE this short thriller -- I was on the edge of my seat reading it and can only imagine how that feeling would expand during a production. Brathwaite effortlessly weaves together moments of horror and beauty in a unique and exciting way, and the characters are heightened and electric. Brilliant short play.

FEBRUARY 14: The Waiting Room by Sharai Bohannon
Sharai is one of my favorite playwrights, and this play is just one more reason why. THE WAITING ROOM is tender, poignant, and theatrical. Another beautiful piece from Bohannon.

Let me know if you check out any of these plays! I’d love to talk about them.
